According to glaucon, we act justly in order to be in accordance with the law, for the law exists to prevent people from wronging each other. Since we do not want to suffer wrong, we compromise with others and form a social contract not to harm each other. It is good for us to be moral/just because just actions promote harmony in the soul, which is intrinsically good. In a just soul, the logical part is in control, the appetitive part is tame, and the spirited part is the ally of the logical part. Baldwin thinks that white supremacy destroys white people"s humanity. Many of them know better, but they find it difficult to act on what they know. To act is to be committed and to be committed is to be in danger. In this case the danger in the minds and hearts of most white americans is the loss of their identity.
