It"s not just the genes that are responsible for phenotype it can be the environment as well. Sometimes, it is multiple genes together to create a combined effect (phenotype) Find a gene based on linkage to a few known markers or sequences. Know the location and sequence of ever gene, as well as all the sequence in between! Pinpointing a gene is easier if you just look at the entire sequence --> use blast search, and find it. Human genome project was conceived in the early 80"s. Idea was heavily criticized within the scientific community as unfeasible, unnecessary, and a waste of resources. Despite opposition, the project formally began in october 1990. To sequence an entirely new genome they didn"t know where to start so they used model organisms. Often smaller genomes, easier to sequence, practice for more complex genomes. Much of what we know about biology, we have learned from model organisms.
