Document Summary

Flat petals give pollinators a base to land on. Usually scented to signal that they have nectar/pollen. Pollen can also be used as a source of food for some pollinators. Hummingbirds are only able to access the plants that have nectar buried deep as opposed to birds. We have flowers that can be species specific: advantages: makes sure the species will visit the same, disadvantage: their lives are highly inter-dependent (if one flower (exclusivity) perishes the other will perish as well) Flowers will invest in higher quality/thicker pollen compared to wind as pollination is more direct. Less effective than animal and insect pollination because it is indirect and random (disadvantage) Plants cope with this disadvantage: use smaller/lighter pollen in very large quantities to, anthers will be more exposed to wind so wind can pick up increase chances pollen more easily (will be positioned outside the flower usually) Autogamy = pollen transferred to stigma of same flower.
