Paraphrasing !
If the client says to you:!
“I don’t want to go to work today, my boss is always telling me what to of and looking
over my shoulder while i’m working and I make even more mistakes. I don’t know what to
do.”!
A good paraphrase would be:!
"It seems like you’re apprehensive about going to work because you’re intimidated
by your "boss. OR!
"Sounds like our boss is a bit of a micro-manager OR!
"Sounds like you’re feeling pretty stressed about work at the moment.!
Clear introduction
Introduction: can be just an open question, essentially make the sender feel at
ease "or let "them know the context of this session, (introduce yourself, provide info on
your role [hi I’m an OT student, I’m interested in what you want to talk to me about "
today], are light-hearted conversation to build rapport, mention the confidentiality
limitations [its confidential unless you’re suicidal or being abused etc], identify " "
purpose of interaction !
Clear conclusion
"Conclusion: need to conclude interaction while still acknowledging the sender, "
summarising is a good idea (from what you’ve told me so far… highlight key points), give
a warning that they have 10/15 minutes left to give them time to talk about the things they
came here to talk about, usually reflection of content and feeling but slightly longer,
drawing key points of everything discussed (so let me summarise what we’ve talked
about…) (today we’ve been discussing…), accuracy and "appropriateness come with
how much you were listening, reflective etc.
A summary of today’s session
It sounds like there’s a lot of dierent techniques for managing an interaction in the
"receiving position, you seem to have a pretty good handle on these. Does this
sound about right to you, have I covered the main threads? "!
"Great, well I’ve really appreciated you sharing this with me and I’m looking forward
to hearing more about this when we meet next week. Thanks so much, see you next
week!
Empathy !
"One of the biggest parts of making your interaction believable is true empathy !
Mediation
"Even though there are only 2 of you, you may need to do some mediation or
problem solving negotiation !
Third person
"Managing the interaction so that all people’s needs are met!
"Managing use of first and second personal skills eectively !
"Deciding whether to ‘send’ or ‘recieve’ information at any given point in an
interaction " !
