Class- Fashion Design
Step 1: Select and Identify Fabrics
You’ll need to find at least eight widely differing articles of clothing and determine the kind of fabrics used to make those garments, or find at least eight widely differing types of fabric. You do not need to own the fabrics though! So you can do this activity at home, in a clothing store, or in a fabric store. If your family tends toward T-shirts and jeans, you’ll probably want to venture out to where you can find a wide variety of fabrics.
Check the content labels that are either in the garments or on the ends of the bolts of fabric.
Step 2: Describe and Analyze Fabrics
Fill out the information on the chart provided below. Provide this information:
• Identify and describe each fabric’s content and characteristics, such as weight, texture, and stretchiness. Is a particular fabric natural or manufactured?
• Identify and describe how each fabric was constructed. For example, are any of the fabrics knitted, woven, or tufted?
• Use what you have learned in the unit to analyze the pros and cons of each fabric. Is a particular fabric easy to care for? What could a designer use it for?
