Do you think the United States government does too much or not enough to help its citizens?  The issue of taxation is often contentious in our country. Some think taxes are our moral responsibility. In our capitalist society, some people believe that social welfare programs organized by the government to help people in need are simply "handouts" and do not create incentives for people to provide for themselves.

Would you be surprised to learn that examples of "taxation" exist even in the animal kingdom?  Read an amusing article from the New York Times to see how taxation is not just a human practice. (Or use the following keywords in an online search: NY times taxing a ritual to save the species)

What do you think?

• What role should the government have in supporting its citizens?  Is it the moral responsibility of the government to provide health care and education for all?  Should these services be strictly limited to the private sector? Why?

• Should the United States government provide more support through social welfare programs or less? Why

• Should the government increase taxes to pay for increased services or should current tax revenues be redistributed?  Where do you think the government should cut spending to support additional social programs? Why?

• Do you think any limitations should be made to the social services that are provided?  Why or why not?
