Background and context

Protein synthesis begins with the association of the translation initiation complex in eukaryotes. The binding of the methionine-tRNA to the 40s ribosome initiates protein synthesis and it is by a protein initiation factor called the eukaryotic initiation factor -2 (eIF-2). This tRNA binds to the high-energy molecule guanosine triphosphate (GTP).
