Background and context

Bacteria are microscopic, relatively simple, single-celled prokaryotic organisms whose cells lack a nucleus. Whereas archaea are similar to bacteria in size and simplicity of structure, they are also single-celled prokaryotic organisms. But they have distinct characteristics which separate them from bacteria.
