Background and context

Sexual reproduction involves the mating of a male and female member of a species that allows the genetic material to be transferred to the offspring from both parents. Fertilization is a process where sperm and egg combine to form the zygote. This can occur either outside the female body (external fertilization) or inside the female body (internal fertilization).
