Background and context

Fertilization is a process in which the male gamete fuses with the female gamete to produce a diploid zygote, which on development forms an embryo, then into a destined fruit or seed or even seed coverings. In all species, fertilization occurs once, while in flowering plants, double fertilization occurs, giving rise to a zygote, that is formed by the fusion of male and female gametes, and the other fertilization occurs between the two sperm cells and the egg nuclei of the ovary. Although it is not considered true fertilization, the fusion gives rise to the triploid structure, which provides nutrition to the growing embryo.
