Background and context

Algae are the most primitive plant species that vascular plants are an advanced form of plants that evolved much later. Bryophytes are the connecting link between algae and vascular plants. The algae do not have any tissue level of differentiation where the bryophytes do while the vascular plants have an advanced form of complex tissues such as the xylem and the phloem.
