In this experiment, you will conduct two different chemicalreactions (see below). Some of the moles of HCL you add will reactwith sodium carbonate in the first reaction and the rest will reactwith sodium hydroxide in the the second reaction.

i. Na2CO3 (aq) + 2HCL (aq) --> 2 NaCl (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O(l)

ii. HCL (aq) + NaOH (aq) --> NaCl (aq) + H2O (l)

If you use 0.502 mol HCL (total) and 0.252 mol NaOH in thisexperiment, answer the following:

a.) How many moles of the HCL react with NaOH?

b.) How many moles of the HCL react with Na2CO3?

c.) How many moles of Na2CO3 react with the HCL?

Total moles of HCl = moles of HCl reacted with sodium carbonate + moles of excess HCl

How will you determine the total moles of HCl added to the flask?

2HCl + Na2CO3 ---> 2NaCl + CO2 + H2O (HCl reaction with sodium carbonate)

NaOH + HCl ---> NaCl + H2O (back titration with excess HCl)

A student plans to neutralize a 10.00 mL sample of 2.00 M HCl with sodium carbonate. Consider sig. figs. for all answers.

A. Balance the following equation that signifies the above reaction:

Na₂CO₃ + HCl -> NaCl + H₂O + CO₂

B. Calculate the number of moles of HCl involved in the reaction

C. Calculate the number of moles of Na₂CO₃ required to neutralize the moles of HCl found in (b)

D. Calculate the mass (in grams) of Na₂CO₃ required to react completely with 10.00mL of 2.00M HCl.
