Given information

To determine: The difference in force required to lift the same object on the Earth and the Moon

To Compare: The force needed to throw a 2-kg object horizontally with a given speed on the Moon and on the Earth.

Given:

a) Mass of the object = 10kg

b) Mass of the object =2kg

Formula Used:

Weight of an object:

Where, m is the mass and g is the acceleration due to gravity.

Step-by-step explanation

Step 1.

To lift the object on the Earth requires a force the same size as its weight on Earth, which is given by

To lift the object on the Moon requires a force as its weight on the Moon

The acceleration due to gravity on Moon is less than that on Earth. Thus, the force to lift object on Moon is less than that on Earth.

(b) The mass of the object is same on moon and Earth. Acceleration due to gravity acts downwards. When the objects are thrown horizontally on Earth and Moon with the same speed, the forces would have to be the same on Moon and Earth.
