4. Indian corn is a festive decoration for the Fall. The corn cob itself represents the mating of two corn plants (male and female) whose offspring are all the kernels on the cob, each kernel representing a developing embryo. In Indian corn, the outer layer of the kernel, or pericarp, is colored when the gene C for color is expressing its domanint condition. The color displayed is either purple (P) or red (p) and purple color is completly dominant to red. However, the homozygous recessive condtition for the gene C is epistatic to gene P, and results in a transparent pericarp. The gene Y controls the color of the endosperm, which can be yellow (Y) or white (y) where yellow is the dominant condition and white is recessive. What would be the genotypes for each of these 3 genes of the parent corn plants for a cob that showed the following progency? Used a chi squared test to assess if you are correct. Indicate the chi squared value, degrees of freedom and critical value for P=.05.

Purple Kernels 275

Red Kernels 90

Yellow Kernels 125

5. Below is a pedigree of a fairly common human herediary trait which the boxes represent males and the circle represent females. Shading symbolizes the abnormal phenoype. Given that one gene is involved:

b. write the genotype (use letters A) of the indivudal under their symbol for all possible alternative explainations
