Hardy and Weinberg (one a genetics expert and the other a mathematician) independently demonstrated that the alleles within populations may be stable under certain conditions. If the allele frequency is variable, they will change, and evolution is possible. If the allele frequencies are stable, will evolution be possible? THINK about this... by definition, evolution will NOT occur when the allele frequencies are stable.

1) What are the assumptions for STABLE allele frequencies for a population from one generation to the next?

About 50 years ago, a new volcanic island springs up out of the ocean creating wonderful new habitat for mangroves. You go to the island and measure many biological characteristics of the island populations. At a microsatellite locus, you find the following allele frequencies, allele 172 = 42%, allele 176 = 58%. On the mainland that sends migrants to the island, the allelic frequency at a microsatellite locus is 172 = 75% and 176 = 25%. Why might these populations have such different allele frequencies? If the migration rate to the island from the mainland is 0.03. What will be the allele frequency after two generations?
