You grow a 150mm plate of cultured human glioblastoma cells to 75% confluency. You shift your cells from 37oC to 4oC and then treat your cells with ice-cold Triton X-100 lysis buffer, pH 7.2, supplemented with protease inhibitors. On ice, you subject your cells to ultrasonic homogenization.

150mm plates are huge! Why use such a large amount of cells?

My coach says that I need to eat 1.2 - 1.5 grams of proteins perkilogram when I have a common cold and flu. I normally eat one gramof proteins per kilogram, while double it when doing my exercisetraining.

He explained that the reason why you need to get more goodproteins when you are sick is that the body is building antibodiesby the adaptive immune system and later for innate immunity.

I think he can be right based only on my own experiences gettingbetter from common cold with low protein diet - it just takes a lotof time, while under high protein diet, you get better faster. Ialso think his explanation makes complete sense to me, sinceantibodies and antigens are proteins.

Why do you need more proteins when you aresick?
