Botulinum toxin is the cause of life-threatening food poisoning. In improperly processed foods, growth of colstidium botulinum can produce the toxin which is then eaten by the consumer. Botulinum toxin causes muscle paralysis by binding to presynaptic sites at the motor end plate and preventing exocytotic release of transmitter from vesicles. Tell 1) how this can lead to death and, 2) how botulinum toxin (Botox) is used clinically.
