A plant derived fatty acid with 16 carbons and branches at C3,C7, C11 and C15.
Present in dairy products and ruminant fats. It may be derived fromchlorophyll
in plant extracts. Phytanic acid derives from the correspondingalcohol, phytol,
and is oxidized into pristanic acid. Unlike most fatty acids,phytanic acid cannot
be metabolized by ??oxidation, due to its ??methyl branch. Instead,it must
undergo ??oxidation in the peroxisome, which converts it intopristanic acid by
removing one carbon.
The peroxisome responsible for the metabolism of phytanic acid isdefective in
some individuals. This leads to a disease called Refsum
