How does a germ cell become a gamete?

So I know that the oocyte and the sperm are the female andmale"germ cell", and that the germ cells give rise to gametes, whichfuse at fertilization. What's the process of a germ cellbecomingactual "gametes"? (especially in females) Is it a matter ofjustmitotic division? or is there a more regulated andcomplicatedpathway behind it?
