As an animal’s body size increases, the number of cells in the organism also increases. Why must the number of cells increase in order to increase body size? Why can’t there simply be the same number of cells, each with larger volume?

All animals begin life as a single-celled zygote, but become multicellular through development. The increase in number of cells must come from an increased number of mitotic divisions and this in turn may increase the risk of developing cancer. However, when looking at animals of varying body size, scientists find no correlation between body size and cancer incidence. Apparently all living humans are matrilineal descendants of asingle woman who lived 200.000 years ago. She is calledMitochondrial Eve.

But at the time she lived there was a different matrilinealancestor that all living humans shared. And between then and now Iimagine many other women have been Mitochondrial Eves of the humanpopulation that lived at a particular time.

What I'm wondering is what kinds of events would cause adifferent, more recent matrilineal ancestor to become theMitochondrial Eve of all living humans?

One scenario I can image is that the human population is on thebrink of extinction and literally only a few people survive.Because there are so few people alive, I imagine that the chancethat they share a more recent matrilineal ancestor is high.

Are there other scenarios possible? Does the chance of a newMitochondrial Eve emerging decrease if the human population islarge (billions) instead of small (hundreds or thousands)? Supposethat the human population will not decrease, is it likely futurehuman populations will ever have a different Mitochondrial Eve thanthe current population? Does it depend on the amount of people thatmigrate?

The same questions could be posed for Y-Chromosomal Adam and themost recent common ancestor of all humans, I guess...
