Document Summary

Reflect on the first week"s readings, and also the film crazywise, and think about your first discussion post. Considering my first discussion post, i would refrain from using the term "mental illness" because having read this week"s assigned chapters it is clear that. "mental illness" is a term used by physicians and those of the pharmaceutical industry to justify the disease model and gain social and economic power. The term "mental illness" relies on the medical community and does not consider the other risk factors to psychiatry such as an individual"s behaviour or circumstances they are faced with in life. For example, an individual who appears sad often is considered to have a neurochemical imbalance in the brain when the actual issue could possibly be financial barriers they face from unemployment. A physician will then prescribe this person some sort of prescription and make profit rather than addressing the underlying issue.
