Document Summary

Equilibrium: no change in number of species. Immigration is higher on a larger island and extinction is lower because there are more resources meaning competition is lower. Smaller islands have larger extinction because the range of resources is lower meaning the competition is higher. Mangrove island: killed the insects on the island and followed diversity over time, the closer islands had more insects than before killing them off, the farther islands had less insects that before killing them off. Dispersal is random to the farther islands. Probability of reaching these farther islands by chance is very low: extinction and immigration is always occurring. If there was a large number of insect fossils than there will be a large number of insects now. Biomes: group of plants and animals that live in a particular region: eastern us: temperate deciduous forest, mid us: temperate grassland, southwest us: desert, san diego: chaparral, canada: coniferous forest, north: tundra.
