Document Summary
Later adulthood (65-80) & very old age (80+) Age is a poor guide for understanding the unique developmental issues of people as they get older. Chronological age is less a determinant that your psychological age. Health is a big determinant of your psychological age and outlook. Ex. active, vibrant 80 year olds do not feel as old as the actually are. Ex. some 65 year olds feel very old because of a health issue. Ageism in america: stereotypical and prejudicial outlook of elderly; discriminate, group profiling; why the elderly age segregate themselves; both the aging and younger people lose out from the loss of contact. We are an agist society: not supportive and responsive to the unique developmental needs of americans as they grow old and enter later adulthood. Most young people have a negative view towards the elderly (old, needy, and isolated from society) Ex. elderly are encouraged to retire and go to elderly housing - isolating older people.
