Age is a poor guide for understanding the unique developmental issues of people as they get older. Psychological age is more important than chronological age. Ageism in america: stereotypical and prejudicial outlook of elderly; discriminate, group profiling; why the elderly age segregate themselves; both the aging and younger people lose out from the loss of contact. Exists because of lack of meaningful contacts of people within this group. Looked at as burdens, not welcome, annoyance, inconvenience. Encourage elderly to segregate themselves geographically and physically. Don"t respect contribution the elderly make to society. Subtle but distinct physiological changes that occur during the developmental process. Rate of slowing down increases as you age. Distinction between slowing and frailty: frailty implies some level of assistance with daily living (adl) Can be not very intense in beginning but as behavior slowing and frailty increases, assistance becomes more intense.
