All communication contexts have goals and needs. We use our communication skills to influence others in attempts to fill our goals and needs. Instrumental: about fulfilling a specific task or function, ex: going to starbucks for coffee, relational, developing a relation with someone, ex: going to bar for relational goal. Identity: helps maintain identity, seeing yourself as a good son, son calling mother regularly. Not mutually exclusive, one tends to be the focus. We can not achieve our goals unless we recognize the needs of the other/s in the context. Role-taking is the ability to predict the thoughts and objections others might have to your goals and needs.
