15 views2 pages

Document Summary

Connect one end of connecting tubing to suction port. Fill basin or cup with 100 ml sterile water or sterile normal saline. Apply a mask or face shield if risk of splash. Masks and shields recommended for protection if there is a risk of airborne body fluids. Remove oxygen mask if in use, leave nearby patient"s face. Insert catheter into patient"s mouth and move gently until secretions are cleared. Careful, gentle movement of suction protects oral mucosa from damage. Encourage patient to cough, repeat suctioning if needed. Coughing moves secretions from upper and lower airways to mouth. Suction water or saline from basing through catheter. Store catheter in clean, dry area with suction turned off. Adjust bed to lowest position, lift side rails if indicated. Enhances independent mobility and safe transfer out of bed.
