I. Difference between leadership and management
• Management: maintains the status quo and keeps things as they are (ie: planning,
leading, organizing, and controlling)
o Constantly looks to see if change is needed- structure follow strategy
• Leadership: changes the status quo and moves people in a new direction (ie: agenda
setting, aligning, inspiring, and monitoring); sense when change is needed and in what
direction to move people
• Management controls people by pushing them in the right direction; leadership
motivates them by satisfying basic human needs
II. What creates a leader?
• Leaders are’t leaders ithout folloers; folloers let leaders lead
• Leadership: a match between what a leader offers and what followers want; to offer
people a reason to follow you
• Match (what leaders can offer employees) changes over time, different matches with
different groups
o Followers will follow if you offer a reason to follow you (WIFM- hat’s i it for
me?)
• Leader traits/characteristics emotional intelligence (EQ)
1. Self-awareness: not blowing up in front of an employee
2. Self-regulation: of eotios so you do’t reate a prole
3. Motivation: a passion for what one does
4. Empathy: understanding where others are coming from and responding to them
in that way
5. Social skill: interacting in a conscientious and compassionate way
III. Other reasons for being a good leader
• Effective leader behaviors:
o Task force
o Relationship or employee-focused
• Effective transformational skills
o Create a vision to guide the change that people value
o Execute change effectively
• Charismatic leadership
o Energize others, instill confidence, inspire
o Exude confidence, demonstrate personal excitement
IV. Examples of leaders
• Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon- mission is to focus on the best customer service
o Looks for people that self-sacrifice to serve the customer in order to beat
