Management maintains the status quo and keeps things as they are: planning, organizing, leading, controlling. Leadership changes the status quo and moves people in a new direction: agenda setting, aligning, inspiring, monitoring. Matches change over time and become mismatches. Leadership = a match between what a leader offers and what followers want. Attributes: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, social skill. Effective leader behaviors: task-focused, relationship or employee-focused. Effective transformational skills: vision to guide the change, execute change effectively. Charismatic leadership: energize others, instill confidence, inspire, exude confidence, demonstrate personal excitement. External factors increase threat to the organization. Three principles: engagement, explanation, expectation clarity. Procedural justice: tell people what the problem is and ask for input on potential solutions, tell people what the change will be and why, tell people what to expect as a function of the change.
