MGT 500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 66: Absenteeism, Job Satisfaction, Human Capital
Document Summary
There is a consistent negative relationship between satisfaction and absenteeism. However, the relationship is more moderate to weak. When a lot of alternative jobs are available for employees, dissatisfied employees have high rates of absence. However, when there aren"t a lot of alternatives, dissatisfied employees have the same low rate of absence as satisfied employees. Organizations that give liberal sick leave benefits are encouraging all their employees to take days off, even the ones who are highly satisfied. You can find work satisfying and still want to enjoy a long weekend if those days come free without penalties. The relationship between job satisfaction and turnover is stronger than the relationship between satisfaction and absenteeism. A pattern of lower job satisfaction is the best predictor of intent. Turnover has a connection to workplace environment as well. If the immediate climate in an employees workplace has lower job satisfaction leading to turnover, there will be a contagion effecting everything moving forward.
