Punic wars: rome expanded and became most powerful in the world, wide-spread destruction in italy. Farmers were drafted and had to fight for hannibal. If they came back alive and was young enough to continue farming, their farm wouldn"t have been there, it would"ve been destroyed in the war or purchased by wealthy romans. Farmland become known as plantations or latifundia (huge plantations owned by a family) Slaves took jobs away from people working for wages: rome becomes a dangerous place to live especially for people with money and power. Tiberius and gaius gracchus tries to reform rome: law of nations. Cannot own more than 1000 acres of land. Gracchus brothers tells this to the senate who own latifundia. Senate doesn"t agree with their suggestion and hire assassins to kill them. First triumvirate: first three guys represent the range to make it in roman politics. Being in the military, have military experience. Julius caesar represents politics (lived from 100-44 bc)
