Some people automatically became citizens: they made another type of citizenship that said you have the right to marry a roman and participate in romes social life but you could not run for office. You also had the right to set up a business protected by trade laws, and you can own land. Rome became a trading center and a huge place to make money: the best attraction to becoming a roman citizen is you are then held to roman law. You have to pay taxes if you are a citizen and you can be drafted into the army. Slaves could be free too: punic wars- wars against carthage, cathage controlled spain and north africa, carthage was rich and powerful and relied on an army of mercenaries. They used loot from war to pay their soldiers: romans and cathage were fighting over sicily. Rome won the first war and gained control: the second punic war is famous because of hannibal.
