Document Summary
We have learned a great deal about the challenges and promises and strategies for studying media; some came from studying methods but more have been indirect. What we have come to see about what it means to study media, what the limits are and what the possibilities are. Self focused theories about understanding media as extensions/projection of ourselves, as ways of dilating ourselves; try to understand these extensions that we create for ourselves, these mediated extensions we create for ourselves in the technological world. Part of what we understand through our engagement with media is what we like about it/don"t like about it/morally condemn and praise. Bound up with our everyday interactions with media, a lot of the conversations that is going on rests upon value distinctions. Issues like nporgnoraphy, violence, gender, etnic representation, etc are all bound up with values; ethics always been a motivating value dimension behind our engagement and interests in these issues.
