How can small and fragile cells form large and stable organisms: how small cells that we"ve been discussing can connect together to build whole tissues and eventually organisms. Epithelial tissues contain cells that are directly connected: connective tissues contain cells that are dispersed in the extracellular matrix. Just below, we have connective tissue: ecm is the main component and bears all the mechanical forces and pressures on the tissue, long polymers of sugars and proteins deposited by cells, filling up the space between the cells. Today, we"ll focus on cells in the epithelium. These are the building blocks of the animal body. Lumen of the organ is connected somehow to the outside world: bones are condensed form of extracellular matrix, made up of dense secreted fibres. Cadherin clusters mediate the adhesion of adherens junctions: cadherin (adhesive receptors) clusters between cells, act as dimers, need to make clusters of adhesion molecules to physically connect physically large cells together (need multiple clusters)
