Document Summary

Second half of day lecture 5 covered next class (nov. 15) Lecture notes: from small and fragile to large and stable. Outside of skin, the luminal side of the intestine, the apical side. Under this, the basal lamina exists, which is a specialized ecm. Cells directly connected with minimal ecm beneath (the basal lamina) > 60% of cell types are epithelial - for skin and organs. Ecm bears most of stress instead of the cytoskeleton. Other cells can have junctions, but epithelial cells has all the following ones. But only when the epithelial cell is completely mature. Occluding junction: includes a tight junction which blocks movement of things. Note that the filaments do not connect over the junctions, it is anchored. Stressors on the filaments is transferred over different connections outside the cell. Tight junctions, adherens junctions, and demisomes are in a junctional complex. Can form strong continuous belts critical for adhering cells to form epithelia.
