Document Summary

Bioa02 module 1, lecture 1: tree of life plants. Tree of life divided into three major kingdoms: bacteria prokaryotes, archaea prokaryotes, eukaryotes e. g. slime molds, algae, animals, fungi, plants. Life on earth developed 1000 million years after earth originated 4. 5 billion years ago. After 1500 million years, earth was only inhabited by prokaryotes. Green algae are ancestral in the tree of life and gave rise to other plant species. Bryophytes can be best described by what they lack in. Vascular plants have a hydrophobic waxy layer that seals the upper and lower epidermis. Sealing the epidermis slows down loss of water through leaves. Consequence without cuticles: loss & uptake of water along whole surface: putting a bryophyte in the sun can dry it out within hours, bryophytes take up water not only through their roots but along the whole surface.
