Physical appearance plays a powerful role in attraction. Walster et al (1996): physical appearances was the only attribute that reliably influenced attraction. But there are standards of beauty that are common to all cultures. It is very important for us to be accepted by others. We depend on others for safety, sustenance and support. Definition: the tendency to do what others do simply because they are doing it. Definition: the tendency to do what powerful people tell us to do. Definition: the process by which people draw inferences about others based on their knowledge of the categories of which others belong. Much of what we know about different groups is hearsay. Participants were shown a long series o positive and negative acts and were tod that these acts were performed by members of group a and b. Critically, each group acted negatively exactly of the time. Participants correctly reported that group a behaved negatively only.
