Relapsing fever is the rst borelia that was found. Spiral shaped bug that is most likely gram negative. Less contagious because it is an obligate parasite. Exist between the inner and outer membrane (ie live in periplasmic space) Can"t see agella because they are inside. Cork screw its way through viscous media. No tca cycle enzymes because it has a paired genome that is 1/3 the size of e. coli. Lyme disease species are mostly in the northern hemisphere. Others are relapsing fever species that are distributed all over. Reservoir is light footed mouse in north america. A tick takes a blood meal on this animal, in the blood meal there is a spirochete. So the spirochete travels back and forth between the tick and animal. Alberta is dry, so its safe because ticks that carry the organism can"t survive in this weather. Ticks can also be carried around on migratory birds.
