Discovered causative bacterium and found it in ticks. Ticks involved are very small, easy to miss. Reservoir is infected field mice and deer. Ticks feed off infected mammals and then bite a human. Bacteria can live in the tick for months. Once in place, the tick may take up to 24 hours to bite. Bacteria enter bloodstream, spread through the body. Characteristic rash at the site of infection (80% of cases) Rash appears 3-30 days after the bite, lasts for 1-2 weeks. Flu-like symptoms: fever, muscle aches, chills, fatigue. May develop a variety of other symptoms: irregular heartbeat, facial paralysis, meningitis. Early diagnosis is difficult, early treatment is effective. Late diagnosis is relatively easy, late treatment is ineffective. Test for presence of antibodies against borrelia.
