People may meet only some criteria, but be labeled with a disorder anyways. On the other hand, people who meet all the criteria for a disorder may not be labeled because of stigmas and work options. There are no clear boundaries between disorders. There is no clear boundary between disorder and no disorder. Diagnoses must be used with cultural sensitivity. Some cultures expect people to hear the (cid:862)voice of their loved ones(cid:863) after they pass away, while others label this as a mental disorder. Common in clinical settings: anxiety, mood (depressive and bipolar) disorders. Debilitating, focus of much research: schizophrenia, mood disorders. Illuminate psychological functions and issues: dissociative, somatoform disorders (physical symptoms with no obvious physical cause) Recent focus of public interest and research: adhd, asd. Epidemiology: prevalence and distribution, information about who gets the disorder and how frequently. Etiology (causes): what we think might be contributing to the disorder, functional, structural, and genetic.
