PSYCH 2AP3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Somatic Symptom Disorder, Dsm-5, Etiology
Document Summary
Continues weaknesses of earlier editions, not working toward scientific classification. Not working toward, a scientifically based classification system, all its doing is group together things with the same symptom. Psychiatric knowledge not advanced enough for revision to dsm-iv. Creates new mental disorders to benefit psychiatry and drug industry - every time we add a disorder we give money to the pharmaceutical industry lowers threshold for several diagnoses, medicalizing normal reactions. Does not mean symptoms are "mental" as distinct from physical. Does not identify disease entity- they are just names - just labeling symptoms: same symptoms may have different causes, same causes may lead to different symptoms, same category for people with different symptoms. Not a cookbook - requires clinical judgement - you cannot just take a set of symptoms and give it a label you need an expert to help with the overall symptomatology.
