KINESIOL 1Y03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Cervical Vertebrae, Fibrocartilage, Intervertebral Foramina
Document Summary
Specific features of each vertebrae will limit the movements in certain directions. 26 vertebrae: 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 1 sacral (5 bones fused together during embryonic development, 1 coccygeal (4-6 fused bones, makes up end of tailbone) Body (anterior) large portion that stacks on top of each other. 7 processes associated with vertebrae: most posterior: spinous process, vertebral arch (left and right sides) 2 regions in each side. Region closest to spinous process is called the lamina and closest to the body is called pedicle: pedicle: region on inferior side notch cut out. These articulations are because of the vertebral column articulating with the ribs. Head of rib superior portion, as it bends articulates with transverse process. Regional differences cervical vertebrae: c1 atlas, holds head on the rest of the vertebral column. Small transverse processes with foramina in them passageways for blood vessels.
