Sympathetic input stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors, relaxes bronchiole smooth muscle and increases lumen diameter bronchodilation. Parasympathetic input induces bronchoconstriction: we do(cid:374)"t feel this it"s our (cid:374)or(cid:373)al resti(cid:374)g state. Airway irritability: hyper-responsiveness, bronchioles narrow easily in response to stimuli such as cold air, exercise, chemical mediators. As histamine and methacholine increase in concentration; force expired volume decreases. Remember that aspirin & ibuprofen can prompt an asthma attack in some patients with asthma (usually severe cases). Aspirin & ibuprofen inhibit the activity of cyclooxygenase, which shifts leads to the production of more leukotrienes, which are highly bronchoconstrictive. If (cid:449)e do(cid:374)"t use (cid:272)ardio-selective beta-blockers, we ca exacerbate asthma or copd. Reduce the intensity & frequency of asthma symptoms: reduce symptoms of asthma (cough, chest tightness, wheezing, sob, reduce need (< 2 days per week) for short-acting beta agonists. Short-acting beta agonists are used for relief; to terminate an asthma attack.
