In the late 19th century art suddenly had the demand to be accountable or responsible to life, a lot of artists at that time decided to completely go against this idea. Fiction has a distant relationship to life; it"s not just an imitation. Three sisters and six characters in search of an author bring up references to the imitation of life. The characters in the play try to understand themselves through the lens of art, and we are constantly being reminded of the distance between these two things. In act 3 masha talks about being in love with. Vershinin; masha describes the idea that life is bigger than art, she concludes her little speech by using a literary analogy as a means of conducting her behavior. Diegetic sound - sound that is actually taking place in the scene as opposed to the soundtrack of a film/drama that plays in the background.
