ENGL 314 Lecture 12: Three Sisters
Document Summary
Chekhov regards his plays as comedies, about people recognizing her silly their lives are. In act 3, there"s a footnote that says chekhov insisted the act to be quiet and took charge of the sound effect himself. To chekhov, the mood, the style, the setting and the feel of the scene gives meaning to the play. There"s something theatrical going on off stage in the play but it"s in the background and so not important. The characters are constantly trying to frame their experience in the world metaphorically, sometimes they do through the activity of art or philosophizing, it"s an attempt to give form to their experiences in life. 99-100: vershinin and toozenbach discuss their different philosophies. Toozenbach is one of the only characters in the play that believes people can be happy in their own lifetimes, sadly he doesn"t get happiness in the end.
