ENGL 314 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Anton Chekhov, Absolution
Document Summary
Expressionism - the inner life of the characters mind being expressed throughout the play, it"s a highly metaphoric or symbolic representation. The killing of the finch was a display of expressionism in the play. The killing of the bird foreshadows miss julie"s suicide, the fact that the bird was in a cage represents miss julie"s feeling of being trapped and her urge to be free. Jean could have decided to free the bird but he chose to kill it, this could be a representation of how. Miss julie gave herself to jean and he ends up telling her to kill herself. Christine is the religious thinker in the play, the one who wipes her conscious clean so easily. Strindberg there is no absolution, no forgiveness or redemption, no getting off for human beings, he is more tragic in his representation of people and miss julie as a character embodies that idea through her death.
