Treatment is costly so prevention is better. It is hard, because it can also affect wolves so not only domesticated dogs, so it is harder to control and prevent. Can also affect cats, but much less than dogs. Malpighian = kidney organ of the mosquitoes. Most dangerous and present in countries that have a hot season (tropics and even here in the summer) It is transmitted between hosts by vectors (mosquitoes) they develop partly in the mosquitoes and they reach maturity in the domesticated dogs. Humans can be reservoir of the worm, but our immune system kill them before they can reach maturity (sexual) Some dogs can remain asymptomatic all their life. See slide 8 for summary of the life cycle of the parasite. Cases are greater where there is summer and where there is water it is more common because it is transmitted through mosquitoes.
