Attitude Change
- individual level: help people perform a behaviour congruent to hoped-for attitude
- ICG (behaviour incongruent with existing attitude) behaviour + NV (non-voluntary) behaviour
- little change of attitude is expected
- extreme case: threat of death || mild case: introduce a prohibiting law
- CG (behaviour congruent w existing attitude) behaviour + NV behaviour
- little change of attitude is expected or even rebound
- reactance theory: when you are about to do something and someone tells you to do the thing;
you won’t do it as you perceive your freedom is lost
- CG behaviour + Voluntary behaviour
- one’s own behaviour may be used as info to strengthen attitudes
- self-perception theory: either strengthens or creates attitudes
- ICG behaviour + V behaviour
- may change attitude towards behaviour for good
- cognitive dissonance theory (Festinger):
- cognitive elements e.g attitudes, behaviour, beliefs

Document Summary
Individual level: help people perform a behaviour congruent to hoped-for attitude. Icg (behaviour incongruent with existing attitude) behaviour + nv (non-voluntary) behaviour. Extreme case: threat of death || mild case: introduce a prohibiting law. Cg (behaviour congruent w existing attitude) behaviour + nv behaviour. Little change of attitude is expected or even rebound. Reactance theory: when you are about to do something and someone tells you to do the thing; you won"t do it as you perceive your freedom is lost. One"s own behaviour may be used as info to strengthen attitudes. Self-perception theory: either strengthens or creates attitudes. May change attitude towards behaviour for good. Consonant: belief (smoking causes cancer) + behaviour (no smoking) = no change takes place. Dissonant: belief (smoking causes cancer) + behaviour (heavy smoker) = cognitive dissonance: use modifying strategies to reduce dissonant feeling. Either quit smoking or believe that i won"t get cancer pft.
