Document Summary

Functions in utero but not essential for fetal survival - only finishes developing (reach max nephron number) just before birth. Final nephron formation regulated by ureteric bud branching (controls number of nephrons formed), met and apoptosis. Ureteric bud (ub) buds into surrounding metanephric mesenchyme, continuously branches to form complex metanephric tree. Induces surrounding metanephric mesenchyme to form renal vesicles, which then become nephrons. Specification of (develops from) the metanephric blastema (formation of glomerulus and tubules from this point) Outgrowth of the ureteric bud leads to branching network. Ub outgrowth at caudal end of the wolffian duct. Undergoes subsequent branching to form a large, complex tree. Does this by invading the metanephric mesechyme (mm) and induces the ub to grow and branch. Reciprocal induction occurs between the ub and mm by production of messengers for communication: branched ureteric tips induce mm to form vesicles, mm induces ureteric tip to branch - continues through pregnancy.
