Document Summary

Morality refers to a general set of standards about right and wrong. Immoral behaviours or moral transgressions involve actions that are unfair, cause physical or emotional harm, violate the rights of others, morality is sometimes likened to an internal compass" that guides our choice of behaviours. A child"s morality is influenced by their personal cognitive growth and experiences in the social world. Children younger than 10-11 years old: uni-dimensional approach, rules are fused and absolute, handed down by very powerful people, rules cannot be changed, moral decisions based on consequences. Children older than 11 years of age it is permissible to change rules, rules are not sacred or absolute, rules are devices to help us maintain order, moral decision based on intentions. Heteronomy: conformity to external rules that are simply accepted and followed without question. The child"s reason for behaving is outside his/her own reasoning and system of personal interests and values.
