PSY 308 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Heritability, Parenting Styles, Still Remains
Document Summary
One classical view of how children came to be moral beings sees young children as having inherently moral nature. A different view sees young children as essentially amoral and too immature to be considered capable of either: Evolutionary psychology: considers morality from standpoint of how certain moral behaviors and patterns of thought might be selected by course of evolution. Emphasizes moral evolutions that are part of a human"s biological heritage. Cultural psychology: focusing on how cultures instill ways of thinking and fostering certain behaviors. Three basic moral values related to justice, community and spirituality. Although moral thought and moral actions are intimately related, clear that they are not the same thing. One does not always predict the other. It has been most natural as a research strategy to focus on either moral judgement in its own right. Or on factors that influence emergence of moral and immoral behaviors.
